Well there is a scientific story behind it that I was going to make a post about to explain it all. In the end I decided against it because I actually have no idea what it's all about.
From what I understand though every time you smell something new your brain (or a part in your brain) creates a new memory for it.
Example: First time smelling choc chip cookies baked by your grandma when you visited her. Then after that whenever you smell choc chip cookies you're gonna think of that time grandma them for you.
Photos are also great ways to remember moments.

Recently a couple guys I once went to school with created 'Create the Change' which you can check out here.

"Their aim is to show the world the stories of those forgotten, and to show the world we can all create change."

Every time they posted a photo my heart became warm and fuzzy remembering the time that I went to Cambodia.
They also met up with some of the same people I did who are working over there to create a change.
Occasionally when I'm in a certain part of town I can smell Cambodia and instantly all the memories come rushing back.
"Seeing the slums, watching people in their open homes as we go past. It’s made me realise that the Pol Pot person (the Khmer Rouge) is the reason why they live like they do. The reason why children have no clothes, why people have no food, little water and poor health care. This is reality and we have to do something to change it."
If I could go back, what would I do differently?
Time to create some new memories.
